AS TWO MORE HUNTING DOGS ARE KILLED, WISCONSIN MOVES TO DELAY WOLF COMPENSATION PAYMENTS
It was Monday morning when the news of two more dead hunting dogs in Wisconsin was released by the state’s DNR. According to the release, one dog was killed by wolves in Eau Claire County on Saturday and another was picked off in Bayfield County on Sunday, as verified by USDA Wildlife Services. The news of dead hunting dogs, while nothing new to Wisconsin hunters, comes just days after officials advanced critical changes to the DNR’s wolf depredation payment program.
Just last week, the Natural Resources Board advanced an emergency rule that would let the DNR delay wolf depredation payments until the end of the fiscal year, or June 30, 2027. In addition to pushing off payments, the rule could also potentially prorate (reduce) those payments based on available funds in state coffers…

🙅 Parks Canada Charges Hikers After Off-Leash Dog Triggers Close Encounter with Banff Grizzly. A pair of hikers are staring down a possible $25,000 fine after Parks Canada officials got wind of a video that depicted their unleashed dog running frantically between them and an approaching grizzly bear.
A Parks Canada spokesman noted that off-leash pets can provoke aggressive responses from wildlife and create risks for both the animals and people. As is required in Canadian National Parks, all dogs must be kept on a lease of three meters or less, something that was completely ignored by the pair who seemed more focused on footage than safety.
The bear involved was none other than Bear 142, a well-known female grizzly roughly 16 years old and the daughter of the famous Banff boar known as The Boss.
👮 Trio of Lousiana Hunters Cited for Deer Tag Violations. Three Acadiana men are facing significant fines, possible jail time, and more than $13,000 in civil restitution after Louisiana wildlife agents uncovered a pattern of deer hunting violations across two seasons. Blake Sims, Alex Bourque, and Steven Sims were cited on June 30 following a months-long investigation covering the 2024-25 and 2025-26 seasons in Vernon and Lafayette parishes.
Agents found the men repeatedly using one another’s deer tags, exceeding daily limits on antlerless deer, and taking excess bucks. Bourque harvested three does in a single day (tagged under the Sims’ names) and four bucks in the earlier season. Blake Sims took two bucks in one day and exceeded the doe limit, while also being cited for shooting a dove out of season. Steven Sims harvested four bucks (one untagged), used a night-vision scope on a deer, and took two does in a single day. Civil restitution sought by the state totals $4,064 for Blake Sims and $4,874 each for Bourque and Steven Sims.
🎣 Jackson Koivun Celebrates First PGA Tour Win by Going Fishing at TPC Twin Cities. Jackson Koivun celebrated his first PGA Tour victory in unusually low-key fashion. After holding off World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler with a bogey-free final-round 66, the 21-year-old won the 3M Open in just his third start as a professional. After signing his scorecard, collecting the trophy, and handling media obligations, Koivun headed straight to a nearby pond to go fishing by himself.
