MONTANA LOWERS WOLF QUOTA AFTER NEW POPULATION ESTIMATE
Officials in the great state of Montana just released their 2025 Annual Wolf Report and some of the figures contained inside are difficult to ignore. With previous estimates pointing to about 1,094 wolves in the Treasure State, a newly refined version of their population model has dropped that number to about 725 wolves, marking a 34 percent reduction that is now also suggesting that the number of wolves in the state has been on the decline for the last five years.
In response to their findings, FWP is now proposing to slash quotas from last year’s number of 452 to 250 for the 2026-27 hunting season.

Minnesota may simplify duck hunting to attract new hunters: The DNR says waterfowl hunter numbers have dropped significantly over the past 20 years, and complicated bag limits for certain species and sexes of ducks may be keeping new hunters away. Canadian man jailed after illegal Florida Keys lobster hunt, cops say: Marko Gacic, 42, from Hamilton, is facing a series of misdemeanor charges stemming from his July 12 arrest in a federally-protected marine sanctuary off Islamorada in the Upper Keys, where a Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission officer caught him hunting spiny lobster using a speargun, according to his arrest report. Bear stranded atop power pole in distress electrocuted: A bear spotted dangling from a utility pole in New Mexico was electrocuted while attempting to come down.

Michigan DNR adds nearly 400 acres to hunting land, Up North elk and bear habitat: The Michigan Department of Natural Resources has acquired nearly 400 acres in the Lower Peninsula to add to wildlife habitats and hunting areas. Read the full story.
Mississippi wants hunters to kill more deer. See the reasons why: The Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks is pushing for a greater harvest of deer with the goals being to not only slow the spread of chronic wasting disease, but to grow more trophy bucks.
"What has our deer population been doing?" asked William McKinley, MDWFP Deer Program coordinator. "Well, it's been rising and it's been rising at a rate that is a little bit alarming." Read the full story.
Grizzly mauls woman on Alaska trail after bear may have been startled by her dog: The Anchorage Fire Department got an emergency call at about 5:30 p.m. Saturday that a woman had been mauled by a brown bear on a narrow trail near the Bear Valley neighborhood, per Alaska's News Source.
