The weekend might not be here just yet, but your favorite dispatch from the great outdoors is.

So grab your coffee or whiskey (no judgement) and let's get caught up on the outdoor news and views from the past 24-or-so hours.

Here's what's worth reading about today:

  • All wrapped up - A four-year international dall sheep poaching incident is finally all buttoned up 🐏

  • Closing up shop - Raging wildfires prompt closing of Boundary Waters 🔥

  • Failed - Oregon’s psychotic anti-hunting bill has failed the first round of signature verification 🙌

  • No more removals - Missouri officials say they are not conducting any targeted deer removals, shifting to hunter-led CWD management instead 🦌

  • Lottery now open - Get in here if you want a shot at a Maryland black bear 🐻

  • A proper entrance - I’ve not seen a wedding entrance this proper in a very, very long time 🤵‍♂️

A TOUGH LESSON FOR THESE BOYS
CROSS-BORDER DALL SHEEP POACHING CASE ENDS WITH CONVICTIONS IN BOTH CANADA AND THE US

In August 2022, what was supposed to be the "hunt of a lifetime" in Alaska's Wrangell-St. Elias country turned into an international wildlife violation. Now, years later, the case has reached its complicated conclusion, complete with penalties on both sides of the border and a reminder of how seriously authorities take illegal harvests of iconic species like Dall sheep.

Back in 2022, court docs stated that Kenneth Eberle of Florida, his son Nathan Eberle of Alaska, and Justin Nagel (Nathan’s college friend) flew by air taxi from Tok to High Culvert Camp inside Wrangell-St. Elias National Park and Preserve. On August 11th, the trio hiked roughly 1.5 miles east of camp and managed to spot a pair of Dall sheep rams and uknowingly followed them across an international border…

Petition to ban hunting, fishing in Oregon fails first round of signature verifications: That’s right, the audacious Oregon ballot initiative that aims to effectively criminalize hunting, fishing, and a wide swath of animal agriculture just hit its first major roadblock. Initiative Petition 28 (the “PEACE Act”) pushed by vegan advocates aiming to strip cruelty-law exemptions for everything from sport hunting to pest control and livestock breeding, submitted what looked to be a staggering 142,784 signatures. Unfortunately for all those (allegedly) tired hands, the state’s chief election officer confirmed that the petition has failed the initial sample verification.

Searching for an 82% validity rate to remain on track, the second sample is now being checked by the Secretary of State’s office, but the early failure is a serious warning shot for a measure that was already a long shot with broad bipartisan opposition.

For now, the signature stumble suggests the movement’s momentum may have peaked somewhere short of the ballot box — and reality. Read the full story.

WANDERINGS // A SFW GLIMPSE OF OUR BROWSER HISTORY

I might catch some flak for this, but I am not about all of this robotic instant reply crap in sports. I liked when referees called offsides in hockey, chair umps made the call on a tennis shot, and we had to deal with the consequences of a bit of human error, even if robots are bit less biased.
