BLACK BEAR KILLS REGINA COUPLE AT REMOTE SASKATCHEWAN CABIN
Last Wednesday morning, Jay and Deb MacDonald flew into their cabin on McTavish Lake, a fly-in lake roughly 90 kilometres (~56 miles) north of La Ronge in northern Saskatchewan. The retired Regina couple, both in their early 70s, had come for a few quiet days of fishing and time at the place they loved.
Unfortunately on this occasion, they never came home…

Iowa deer hunting changes to two license zones: State Deer Biologist Jace Elliott says the change is for resident licenses. “Our new resident deer zone framework is probably the biggest change to our deer harvest framework in Iowa in almost 40 years,” he says. “We’re going away from a statewide general tag system in order to better serve the deer resource in areas where the population is limited and harvest vulnerability is very high.” Read the full story.

Too few caribou, too many bears: Bristol Bay subsistence hunters favor state bear cull to protect food: The state of Alaska is in year four of an unprecedented cull of brown bears around the Mulchatna caribou herd north of Dillingham. Hunting guides running businesses in the region, which depend on reliably being able to show clients to wild bears, have mixed feelings about the state’s approach, its impacts on the animal population and what it means for their livelihoods. But the program is not especially controversial among local subsistence hunters and advocates interviewed by the Daily News, who say there has always been a need to keep bears in check. Wildfires prompt CPW review of some Colorado hunting license options: Colorado Parks and Wildlife is reviewing hunting license options that could be affected by the Aspen Acres and Willow fires. In a written statement to 11 News, CPW said about 50 different hunting license options are being evaluated as fire conditions continue to change. The agency said the number reflects license options, not a specific number of hunters.
CPW said the review is focused on more than burned land. Even if a hunting area was not directly impacted by the fire, road closures, limited access and other safety concerns could still prevent hunters from reaching those areas. Read the full story.
New elk calves starting to appear on Tomblin WMA: The calving season is in full swing among the West Virginia elk herd on the Tomblin Wildlife Management Area in Logan County. However, it’s hard to know just how many are out there since elk are very different than whitetail deer in their nursery habits. Read the full story.
